Signs of turbo failure
Ok, i was pretty sure you couldn't, but I posted the ? because the audi dealer in westmont Il. told me it was possible, you just need to replace the turbos with piping. I had a feeling he was full of ****

hey guys,
i have an 2007 audi a3 and i think im hearing a grinding noise from the turbo. its coming from behind the glove box and when i open the windows i hear it clearly when i start accelerating. sometimes it grinds sometimes it doesnt. its funny how that grinding noise is syncronized withthe dsg gear changing, meaning it comes and goesmainly when it switches gears.so im confused which one it is.turbo ortransmission issue? i dont hear it when i start the car but when im accelerating a little harder or while im cruising at60 and decide to acceleratei hear it. Its alsoconfusing how it doesnt grind when i accelerate abruptly. Its actually very faint inside the car. itsounds almost likethere'ssand flying around in the hood. but when i open the window i can hear the obvious grind.

not trying to start anything here but realalisticly you could run the car without turbos. The cost of fab would be about the cost of turbos and install. Here is what you would need to do...
---make 2 pipes to go inbetween the manifold and downpipe
---make 2 pipes to connect the intake pipes to the inlet of the ic pipes
In all honesty you would also want to lose the ic due to pressure drop.
I would not do it but yes it is possible

I was asking the same type of question on another S4 forum and the guys over there informed me. They also sent me a link to youtube with the following videos. Hopefully this helps.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXL32KFq0pY(Sound of dentist drill whining while boosting through tunnels)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_r907Xpqxo(sound of dentist drill whine as he speeds buy)
The sound of the turbos going is VERY distinct. It took me a while to decipher the difference because I kept thinking the normal turbo whine-up was the dentist drill whine (paranoid). But when it happens, I'm pretty sure you'll know.

haha....I definately lose sleep over the thoughts of turbo failure...or any failure for that matter!

hi guys its me again,
i brought it into the dealer again to check out that grinding sound. the guy who sold it to me said there's probably soemthing wrong. the mechanic said there's nothing wrong. so what am i supposed to do. he kept going of with how the a3 is very different compared to other cars. the dsg, the turbo.e.t.c. he said that's why sometimes you are supposed to hear weird noises. haha then he went off talking about the diverter valve for the turbo and he thinksthat is what the grinding sound is. i guess he can make an argument saying that grinding sound is kind of like a compressed air sound. however i always thought DVs work like blow off valves. they come when the gear switches,or when you let go of the gas. not during acceleration. the mech also said that the dv diverts air away from the turbo when it thinks you dont need that much boost, and that's the sound it produces, which in turn saves some gas.to me that's crap. they're just waitingfor somethingto go wronguntil they can fix it.can someone confirm that? the funny thing is that i've got anothermech look at it and he said that audi cars turn off their engines when the dsg switches gears so that there's a smooth transmission. is that total crap as well?I thinkthis is really getting on my nerves. they keep trying to come up with excuses so they dont have to fix it under warranty. right now im just driving the **** out of my car so that the problem gets worse if there is a problem. any suggestions or any ideas of what thissound might be mentioned in a earlier post?
