Default Estimate about water pump replacement

Hello all, I'm new here but thought I could use some advice for an estimate to make sure I'm not getting ripped off.
I have a convertible audi TT quattro from 2002 with 58k miles.
Two days ago it was super hot here in LA and had the AC on full blow for a while and all of a sudden I see the temperature going up almost to the max so I quickly turn off the AC and as I was driving to exit the freeway the temperature went back to normal.
I went to a local mechanic and he thinks it's the water pump.
Since the car is 8 years old but only 58k he thinks it's time anyway to change the timing belt and all like you would on a 90k car.

The rough estimate was about $1400 for water pump, timing belt, some cracked vacuum hoses and a (barely) leaking oil stand gasket.

What do you guys think?

Thank you.

Git 'er done!!!

I have a 2001 w/50,000 miles. The factory says every 7 years regardless of mileage. A broken belt will cost you much more. As much as $7000.00 or more, I'm told.

I can't speak about the other issues but it's time to change the belt.

I paid about $750.00 to have the belt/water pump changed at an Audi dealer.

BTW there was a timing belt recall a while back. If you search this forum you'll find a discussion.

Good Luck

Thanks guys I feel better now.
I didn't bring it to the dealership has the reviews were really really bad and they people leave with a more problems than they actually came with...
I'll keep you updated about the final price.

Thanks again.

Any recommendation about a specific brand or website to buy a pump with metal impeller?

Thanks

Get the belt changes asap. Like yesterday or before.

If the belt goes, you'll have about 2 nano-seconds to regognize the problem and shut her down before the valves and pistons slam together. Are your reflexes that quick?

cheers

Don't worry I"m changing the belt and the water pump.
The mechanic called back, there's also a heat sensor that doesn't work, even with a new water pump the car was still overheating, the sensor tells the computer at what speed should the fan rotate but even in extreme heat the fan was still slow.
I had to keep the OEM water pump, couldn't get a metal one or the warranty wouldn't cover it, too bad for them, they are the ones paying hehe but they don't cover the heat sensor or the timing belt.
