Default Tricky Tranny, need advice

Hey all. My 2003 AR has an interesting trans. I have an '01 A6 with the 2.7T motor, and I presume, the same transmission? Anyway, when I'm on the interstate at a 65/70 mph cruise, the trans is saying that I'm in 5th, but oddly, the motor is still turning at roughly 3k rpm. That just seems way too high, given that the A6 turns about 2,400/2,600 at the same mph. Any thoughts? I'm going to paste this q over to the A6 board also, it couldn't hurt.

Egad. Okay, I'll leave her alone then. How's your mileage?

It has to do with the final drive gear in the allroad transmission. It's geared lower since the car is heavier than the A6 to keep acceleration about the same, the trade off being a high highway RPM.

I wonder what it would take to get the gear changed out?
Any transmission wizards out there?
