TLDR: The MMI radio turns on with the last preset unmuted volume, when I start the car. Can I change this so that the radio turns on only if I explicitly request it by actuating a switch?

I usually park in an underground parking place and before I enter the garage I turn off (mute) the radio. When I start the car again, then it's just static noise due to lack of signal in the garage. So every time I shall manually turn the radio off again. Why can't the radio stay silent at start if I left it muted before turning off the engine?? Any way to change this?

You might try turning down the volume rather than muting. It will remember volume level or lack thereof.
