considering buying a3...performance?
i don't own an audi, but i am considering buying an a3, 2.0t, fwd, four doorfor my daily driver. i would probably get the auto (i'm tired of being stuck in traffic with my manuals). i have a weekend car that is plenty fast and only getting faster, so ultimate performance is not my goal. just have a few questions you guys should know the answers to.
1) 200hp is pretty weak so i would like to chip it. how much power would this give me at the wheels? how much over stock would the chip add? do you have to dyno tune the chip or are the pre-programmed with a tune?
2) do cai's on these cars sound ricey? i don't really like the sound of 4 cylinders so i would avoid any mod that makes the intake or exhaust much louder.
3) what would a 2.0t, auto, fwd with chip do in the 1/4 mile? not that i'd be racing it, but this would give me and idea of its performance.
4) since the auto is a dry clutch, it would makeabout the samepower as the manual, right?
thanks.

2)Intake won't sound ricey, but the exhaust will give you a loud 4-cyl sound
3)upper 13's to 14 flat
4)The S-tronic is actually faster than the manual, according to the book.
Cheers!

thanks chef. and thanks for going easy on a noob. i actually saw that sticky but there was so much fluff in the posts i grew tired of it quickly. wow, 220-235hp at the wheels from just a chip? thats a VERY impressive gain. this is very good news to me.

RE: considering buying a3...performance?
So there is only a 7-12% drivetrain loss? I haven't looked at any dyno graphs lately, but it seems that you would need some of the extra little goodies along with the chipto get 220-235 whp..
Honestly, I would have guessed that the chip by itself would have gotten the car to just around 200 whp...but like I said, just a guess.

Chef's numbers sound a little high, but could be variations in dynos. Best way to get a feel for things is to get a ride in a chipped A3 in one of our next get together.
From you nickname and questions, I am guess you come from a Honda background? Put it this way, no naturally aspirated Honda DOHC I4 car will give the A3 any trouble in a straightline, except maybe a S2000. A3Night (now has a S2000) and I go driving all the time, and I have no trouble keeping up or passing him on the freeways with just an APR91 octane Stage 1 tune (rated 246hp and 282lb-ft at the crank).

RE: considering buying a3...performance?
Yeah, my numbers might be a little inflated come to think of it. But, with my tunes, I have beaten chipped B5 S4's. The difference in driving a chipped A3, opposed to the Honda world, is that there is ample amounts of torque which "feels" much more powerful to drive.
Oh, I just looked at my dyno graph with the REVO I chip and K&N CAI and it read 218whp. Not bad.
Cheers!

218hp at the wheels is still pretty good...more than i expected with just a chip. the chip must really crank up the boost.
haha, no i have never owned a honda - and a honda has never beaten me in any race! i picked my name because of my 1997 mustang cobra and 2005 g35 sedan. both have manual transmissions, both rev to 7000rpm. with an exhaust, the dohc v8cobra engine sounds like perfection. my other recent cars: 89 mustang (314whp, 345wtq), 1995mustang (281whp, 325wtq).
