So i started to notice my 01 1.8t has developed this deisel like sound, so i went to replace the plugs and there was oil surrounding the plug and coil. i replaced the valve cover gasket and took care of the problem but i'm left with the sound still. it kind of sounds like the blow off valve (which is diverted back into the intake, please don't flame me) is fluttering all the time. any thoughts?

Check to make sure you bov is running closed at idle, and that you don't have any vaccuum line leaks. My uncle had a similar problem on his Golf III and it was a vaccuum line fitting that had cracked.

i was thinking about that but the cel should be flashing if it misfires, i had to get some body work done so i can't pull any codes from it until later next week.

 

When does it do it? Is it only on start up or is all the time?

Just because the CEL isn't on doesn't mean you don't have any codes.

 

well i have a code, but it's cause i have a test pipe and i haven't had a chance to check for any new codes. but the sound is noticable when i'm idle, or anytime i'm under 1 psi. like i said i'm getting a paint job right now so i can't pull up anycodes right now as much as i'd like too.

 

My car sounds like diesel at startup then quiets down after 2 secs, i think its when ive built back pressure. Anyway well wait till you get codes
