Default 96 A4 quattro, blower

Isn't this the worst winter for my blower to stop working? No heat, no defrosters. nothing.

Occasionally, like, once every 3 weeks, The blower will decide to work, but it is dormant the rest of the time. Is it the motor that is gone, or is it the climate control unit? My car has automatic climate control.

Haynes says that if the car has automatic climate control, that I should let a licensed mechanic do it because it is too complicated for the average back yard mechanic to repair. Is this true?

If it is the motor, can I fix it myself, or do I need a new one? I'm a college student, with very little money.

looking for a quick reply as I need to fix this ASAP, before I kill a pedestrian.

It's either the blower or the control unit (behind it). If you buy a fan, it comes WITH the controller...it's not that hard to take out or get to.....either buy a used one, or a new one...they both should have the controller on it.

Take out the blower motor and test it with 12V to see if it runs...and go from there....

To get to it, open right door, remove the glove box (5 screws), then you'll see it, 3 screws hold the fan in. If I remember right, one of the screws is hard to get to, it's a torx, but you can google and find a DIY...

The 1996 has a different plug on it than blower motors from 97 on up, if it's bad, try and find a used one that was 'made in germany'.....as far as fixing it yourself, I believe it's a closed unit...and non-repairable...
