Does anyone know if a used or replacement ABS module has to have the exact same part number as the orginal?

Yes. The ending letter is very important.

 

Thanks...so same sequence of numbers but a different letter on the end is bad news? So a "D" won't work in place of an "M"?

 

Nope, different model years have different ABS features like ESP. Welcome to the club, many of us still looking for that "M"

 

Ok, so as I am searching for one I see frequent references to an ABS controller under the left seat. Can anyone explain the diff?

If you want a new module you're looking for the one under the hood. I was looking for one also and I just gave up and decided to have mine rebuilt by Module Master. Its only $200 and you save on labor costs if you remove and reinstall it yourself. I'm sending mine in to them tomorrow so I'll let you know how it goes if you're interested.
