B5 A4 1.8T and 2.8 engine noise
When the weather is cold outside is the 1.8T suppose to make a loud noise that sounds like a damaged lifter or valve damge? Is the 2.8 suppose to make a clicking sound when you start it up in cold weather that sounds like a lifter is sticking? I am not very familiar with what an Audi 1.8T or 2.8 engine is suppose to sound like during cold weather starts. I am looking into buying a B5 A4 and want a reliable machine but every A4 I have seen at local used car dealerships has made a rather loud noise during start up clicking sounds and just odd noises coming from the engines, the 1.8T making the loudest noises and the 2.8 being more smooth and quiet. According to the car salesmen the reason for the sounds is the way Audi engines are designed they are notorios for those sounds because of the way the oil goes through the engine. So is this true? do the engines make these sounds because of the cold weather about 30deg. outside when I was there.
Here is an article I found about Audi's recall because of cold weather starts that damged the car.

Theyare only making that noise because they are on a used car lot, it takes a second for them to build up oil pressure so your hearing the lifters tapping until oil gets to them. Our engines have tight oil clearances so thats a normal noise and nothing to be weary about.
Well today Ileft a depositona used 1998 Audi A4 1.8T quattroand I have to say besides the nasty color beige the car is in perfect condition its fully loaded with all options the engine started up nice and smooth except when I lifted the throttle on the car the engine starts to hesitate for a couple seconds like its about to shut off, I have no idea if its suppose to do that maybe its because its cold out, I test drove it and when I put it into drive I heard the engine make that hesitations again, I decided to take the car anyway because the interior looked like brand new as if it was untouched, by the way the car has 107,000miles with all service records and timing belt replaced at 90,000miles according to the salesmen. The car ran like a champ on the expressway and the exhaust gases were real clean, the only thing that has me worried is the engine hesitation when I give the car a little gas or its put into drive.
Try giving it a couple of WOT (wide open throttle) runs, it could just be carbon build up on the intake flap what not.
Being at 110,000 miles i would imagine that the vaccum lines need to be replaced too, if you have some electrical contact cleaner take of the MAF sensor and clean it and replace the air filter.
