Default broken axel?

I honestly dont know much about my car at all, so if this is a stupid question then go ahead and flame lol. Anyway, I'm not sure but I think my back right axel could be broken. When I am driving and then let off of the clutch, a sound that reminds me of metal hitting metal comes from that direction. Could my axel be broken or could it be something different entirely?
Thanks
-Dom

BTW as my name says I drive a 1996 A4 Quattro

Jack only that wheel up and try to spin it. If it spins then you have a problem, If you can't spin it the axle isn't your problem.

Wow if the axle was broken I think you would KNOW. It wouldn't make sounds only when you let off the clutch.

Get on your back and check out both rears. Look at the axle, look at the boots on either end of the axle. Look for any splattered fluid.

No matter what, it doesn't sound like you are one to jump under there and fix it. Get her over to a good Audi shop to get it fixed up. Post back what the problem was.

It sounds more like the coast side of the rear differential gears is worn. Check your rear differential fluid and make sure its not low.
