Buying a 2000 a4 2.8Q
i just traded cars with my friend for a day. he has a '00 2.8 with 174k miles on her and no service of any kind except a few oil changes.(my friend doesnt even know what a timing belt is) even though the interior/exterior is falling apart; the engine is somehow still reliable and drives excellent.
LOL, I love how people ask about 1.8T and get tons of stuff to look for but the guy looking at a 2.8 gets to hear how reliable the engine is. Whoo hooo to another 2.8 driver on here.
Buying an Audi is all about the service records and good solid maintenance. Usually I tell people about tie rod ends and control arms, but I think they were upgraded by 2000 and less of a problem. Earlier models would have them go between 80k and 100k. If you want to check them out, listen for a noise in the front end at slower speeds while going over bumps. It could be sort of like a thumping sound or a high pitched squeeking sound for control arms. If the steering feels loose especially on center, its bad TREs.
Other than that, I would listen for the usual...any strange sounds etc. You can check for sludge but are probably fine as long as he changed oil on regular basis. When you buy the car, start running a full synthetic and changing every 5k miles. This will help ensure you don't get any sludging problems later.
IDK, make sure the shifts an smooth in the auto tranny, and turn on everything including heated seats, sunroof, fog lamps etc. Other than the CA and TRE thing which I don't think applies to that year as much as it did on my car, just do your usual thorough check out.
Let us know how the test drive goes. And if you buy it, you have to post pictures.

what more do you guys want ? you get blowers, we get turbos, its like shirts and skins...but ours comes from the factory with a turbo, and you have to pay like 5g's for a blower
Your right, you guys get everything. You get all the tiny turbos, and all the CELs, and all the boost leaks....
I would never get a blower. I didn't pay much more than that for the whole car. I have come to terms with my 190hp.
