Changing a 97 V6 thermostat
At least on the 12V 2.8, the timing belt does not have to come off, but the tensioner near the thermostat housing may need to be slackened. I didn't replace the timing belt and water pump, which had been replaced two years earlier, along with the thermostat. Someone on the PassatWorld forums indicated that some of these thermostats have been unreliable, but I have never had a 2-year-old thermostat fail before. (Thermostat failure at the 8 year mark was what led the first owner to change the timing belt and water pump at that time, as well.)
