My Audi A4 2002 engine light came on today. When I opened the bonnet that is what I saw. What is the function of that (picture) hose pipe? The car is weak on power. I made appointment but its going to be in two weeks. The picture without the red tape is before and with the tape is after. Thanks in advance.

I went to ECS Tuning website and just looked under emissions and it looks like it is a hard pipe, part of the air pump system. Failure would cause the issues you are having. There appear to be seceral different types. Might want to check it out further.

This is the only one that had a pic. There are others without a pic. Hope this helps.

Rhodes 991 thank you for the time you gave me. Strangers are friends you never met. Surely I thought so too but wasn't sure. I know nothing about engines but when a problem arises am ready to tackle it in theory. I already bought the part this morning, glad that Audi Dealer was open for two hours only. I took advantage of it. I thought I could fix it myself thinking the damaged part only was in need to be replaced. But when I bought the hose pipe it was complete. Exactly the same but only different from the flexible part. Here are pictures of the new part.
