I am battlingwith erratic starting on our 2001 A4 Avant (1.8) .

The problem is that theengine turns but doesn't take. It will often start a few minutes later. We thought the problem was the battery and therefore just replaced the battery but the problem persists.

Sometimes jump starting helps (but only off a car with a decent battery) and other times push starting helps.

I have taken the car to Audi (they did some work on the throttle control) and just yesterday took it to a workshop who read the computer but couldn't find any fault.

In desparation, I added some inector cleaner to the fuel tank but this doesn't seem to be the problem.

I would apprecaite any comments or advice.

Have you looked for broken vaccume hoses? What did they do to the throttle control, a clean and adjust or just one or the other?

They billed me for adjusting and cleaning the throttle body.

I am technically challenged. Can anyone recommend a website that will explain how to find the vaccum hose and how to check for leaks?

On the left side of the engine, between the intake manifold and
the G-12 reservoir, there is an L shaped vacuum hose. Check
the elbow for tears.
