ORIGINAL: ThePaintballGuy

The boost gauge DIY is REALLY easy! There is nothing complucated about it.

Josh
Ha. Replacing the air filter in the b6 was a 'tough' job for me.

I've looked at the DIY. I'm sure i could do it if i had the time, and a pair of second hands who knows more about cars. I'll get my dad to help me out one of these days.

And Bishop - Thanks for the advice. I'll check that line later today.

Oh, and i found how (sort of) they did the boost leak test. They said they just hooked up an air compressor i think, and put about 10psi through the system to look for leaks.

Here's my sorry *** 10.5 second 0-60 video.

Am I in limp mode or something? I hear the turbo spool up and whistle, then the 'woosh/pshhht' as i let off the gas. Does the turbo even spool in limp mode? I also tried disconnecting the battery for a few minutes, but that did nothing.

This is starting to seriously **** me off.

I agree with the other guy, you may have a boost leak or something. I have a giac chip upgrade and hi-flow injectors and i run 6.5- 7 second 0-60 times. the only other engine mod i have is a carbonio intake. I don't even have an exhaust yet. You should check all your lines because you should definately be running faster than 10 sec. btw, i also have a tiptronic.

Another thing you could do is take the car back to the guy that tuned it for you and have him plug it back into the laptop and have him check for any errors, he could also take it for a spin to get some logs in the computer and he should definatly be able to tell whats wrong from there. good luck!

Update -

Took the car in - there was a code related to the MAF. We took it for a spin with the VAG, and it was reading about 130 g/s. So replaced the MAF, and now it's reading about 145 g/s - a bit of an improvement. What are all you guys running?

Then he looked at the boost through the VAG, and it was showing up at about 13/14 psi, and he said it should be around 17/18 psi (is 17/18 correct with the GIAC FX and injectors?)

So they ran another boost leak test, and that came out perfectly fine. So they're basically stumped as to why i'm only at 13/14 - one guy suggested it's the altitude (living in salt lake at 4,500 feet).

So they sent an email off to Garret (i guess Garret of GIAC) asking what the deal is - or if there's some altitude adjustment.

Anyways, I let ya'll know what they hear back, because i know you're all so interested...

just to let you know, altitude has a strong affect on your car's HP. I live in the Rocky Mountains in CO, at about 8,700' - 9,500' and my car runs significantly slower than when I get back into Denver (at 5,280'...one mile high...). My car actually kicks *** when I'm in the city, and just has a ton more lag in the mountains.

I've been told by a few different people out here that for every 1,000' in elevation, you'll lose around 4-6 hp. I don't think it's quite 6hp, but somewhere around there. There's no excuse for chipping your car and having the exact same 0-60 time, but driving your car at an elevation of around 4,000' will make it slower.

BTW when I drive over mountain passes at 11,000' out here my car is a ton slower than it normally drives. I was worried sick about it until I realized all cars start to suck the higher you go. I think you may even be able to have your car tuned for a higher elevation, but most places will have no idea how to do it...

GL!

Lampy - are you chipped? Do you have a boost gauge? Do you know how much boost your pushing?

I'm just curious if altitude has an effect on PSI. I'm supposed to be about 18, but am only getting 14, and I'm wondering if that's due to the altitude.

Altitude definately has an effect on the amount of psi. With my wrx, when it was stock, i lived in denver I was only pushing 10 psi and I moved to Houston and i was pushing 14 psi, with no changes at all just the altitude.
