Default Help with electrics on dashboard

A complete and utter newbie here. I recently bought an A4 1.6 96 model off a friend for very cheap. He told me there were a couple of things wrong with it, but nothing major.

It originally had an automatic gearbox in it that went wrong. For some inexplicable reason my friend replaced the automatic gearbox with a manual one. Everything works fine, except for one thing. None of the clocks on the dashboard work. I don't think it's a case of replacement fuses or anything. I think it's got something to do with the gearbox switch.

Have any of you fine fellows come across something like this before? Could you offer me any advice?

Like I said, I bought it at a very cheap price and am a bit reluctant to go to a garage .

If it just clocks ignore it. Alternatively you can remove the instrument cluster and check that the connections are OK. Removing and replacing the instrument cluster is a 30 minute job.

if he changed ecu's there might be some clitches and you would have to get the ECU reflashed, i sold a ECU to a guy with a passat and he had the same problem, everything worked but the clock and a few other things but once it was reflashed everything was ok..

Cheers for your help fellas. I'll try the connections for the cluster first. Hopefully that'll do the trick, if not

I presume I could get the ECU flashed by an Audi dealer. Does it cost alot?
