Default Need help, starter spins but doesn't crank engine

I have a 1999 A4 1.8. It died last year after having an issue for about a week with the engine turning over very slowly on starting and while idling, then I slowed down almost to a stop while making a right turn and it died. It wouldn't start up again and still won't start. A mechanic said the timing belt broke and probably messed up the valves. I found out timing belts are cheap so I decided to replace it myself and see if I was lucky and hadn't done any damage past that. I opened the car up and got to the timing belt to find it unbroken, looking just fine. The starter will spin but it won't crank the engine. Anybody know what I should do? I am also wondering if anybody has the repair manual, I'd like to have one but I don't really want to pay $130 for it. If anyone has it on pdf or something or I could western union or paypal you some money to mail a paper copy to me or something?

Most jobs you want to do nowadays you can find on u-tube just google it. Starter spinning and motor not turning either the gear not shooting out would be a faulty starter or teeth missing on the flywheel on the flywheel. I always buy the shop manual bite the bullet and spend the $130 it usually pays dividends in the long run and if your keeping the car a rosstech vagcom is an expensive but handy tool that will pay for itself quickly if you do your own work. It's about $500. but you can pull codes, reset faults and change computer setting on your car and its real fun to use. And it's good for all vw,audi and porsche made. It will save you $100 each time you need a dealer readout.
