Default Engine doesn't crank(intermittent)

2003 A4 1.8t Quattro--

More often than not, but not all the time, when I turn the key to start the car, the engine doesn't crank. All dash lights are on and everything else electrical seems to be functioning fine. The battery is brand new from Audi. After I turn the ignition back to "off" and turn the key again, the car starts with no problems. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this problem?? Thanks in advance, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try & move the shifter into neutral while appling the brake & give that a try.
Could have a neutral safety or ignition switch issue.

Automatic or manual transmission?? Either way, does the information display display anything like "push brake to start" or something along those lines when you are trying to start the car? Could be a faulty switch in the clutch if you are consistently trying to do it correctly.

does it continually try to turn over? i know mine did that for like 10 seconds before actually starting. it was the engine speed sensor

The problem might be with the ignition switch as said by M5S5.

B6's and B7's you can start without pressing the brake.

The clutch could be an issue but most likely the ignition switch. The electrical part, not the tumbler

I had the same issue with mine today as well.. it was really frustrating.. I got it to crank after trying like ten times.. but is this ignition switch certain issue. And is the part expensive.. I just got my Audi n would hate to have to buy parts already..
