Default not your avaerage overheating problem....

Hello all,
I have a 97' A4 2.8 auto 87k with a strange overheating problem..
After I drive for about 25 min (and only after 25min) in traffic, the temp gauge will go up to 3/4 hot and sit there until I start driving at a steady speed again... (40-45 mph)
I can drive this car on the highway at 70-80 mph for an hour and the car will never run hot...
the timing belt was changed at 60k.
Does this sound like a thermostat or a water pump or?
And is it possible that the waterpump blades are slipping after it gets hot or just a faulty thermostat?
Thanks for any help.....

This had been happening to me. Then my CEL came on.. and now its off. Checked the codes using the OBDII connection and pulled the code it was: "Coolant Tempurature Sensor Too High Voltage" meaning its shorting out and sending higher voltages out.

Replace your coolant sensor and all shoud be well!

$16.95 for my car.

CEL = Check Engine Light

OBDII = On Board Diagnostics 2nd iteration. OBD is a standardization format for checking the various electrical systems all cars now require to operate. It's what allows you to pull into your local Quik-E-FIX with ANY kind of vehicle and they'd be able to plug into your car and read a standard code that defines a particular type of malady. Basically.
There are software programs available that permit one to connect their car to their laptop and read teh same info... Basically.

"CEL": check engine light". "OBDII": on board diagnostics, version 2.
It sure sounds like the temp sensor the other guys are pointing out. This will cause the electric fans not to come on, which would create the symptoms you are describing. Easy fix, not big$$.

Dont stress, I think if it stays there it isn't a huge drama. Make sure you aren't leaking water & then get the sensor checked.
