Sorry to belabour this reprogramming issue. After replacing the batteries in the remote for my '96 A4, I tried the procedure you describe, but it does not seem to work. Is there a different procedure for my model and vintage?

Also how many times did you try? The first time I tried to program my remote it took me about 5-10 minutes to get it right. Just be patient, follow the instructions and it should work.

The 1996 remote is different IIRC:
1. Put 1 key in the ignition and turn it on. (Don't start the car, just turn it on until the dash lights up. )
2. Roll down driver's side window. 3. Take the second key and lock the car using the drivers door.
4. Hold BOTH buttons on the remote until the turn signals flash and the door unlocks. It should take about 5 seconds or less.
