for some reason my tiptronic suddenly stopped working, the console display highlights P R N D 4 3 2 all at once, the car isn't shifting into 5th gear anymore, and the automatic downshift into first gear is a lot more violent..any ideas?

 

Get ahold of a vag-com and run a diagnostics test on your transmission.

Your transmission has gone into LIMP mode to protect itself. Only 4th gear, reverse neutral and park will work.
You will need a vagcom to diagnose the problem. Could be anything from a bad TCU, to transmission problems.

 

of course..i forgot to make that my first order of business...

so i got only 1 code for AT (?) 293 - Multi-function Transmission Range Switch - Malfunction (PRNDL Input) (F125)

I read that this could be a result of magnets that fell out that work with the shifter..should that be the first thing to check?

Is there anything special I need to know about putting the magnets back into place?

I don't know if this is a related problem, but I saw that someone else had the exact same codes, but I am also getting the code 526-Brake Light Switch - Incorrect signal (F)

so i erased the codes and the tiptronic works even into fifth gear...i didn't open up anything to see if the magnets fell out. i am still curious as to what made it go into limp mode though.
