Default transmission trouble?

I have a 2003 A4 1.8T with a 5-speed manualand I've noticed lately that shifting from 1st to 2nd gearisn't smooth. It feels like it's catching somewhere between 1st and 2nd as I'm shifting. It sort of makes a "clunk" noise but doesn't actually grind. It is most noticable when the car is cold. It doesn't do it so much as the car warms up, such as after freeway driving. The car has about 60,000 miles and I just had the transmission oil changed with synthetic 75w-90. Is this 1st to 2nd "clunk" an Audi thing? I noticed it even before I had the oil changed and was just wondering if anyone else has noticed this. The car is all stock. Thanks for your input. This site has been very informative.

I have the same issues when it is cold, the gear lube thickens when it is cold making the tranny hard to shift. If it happens when the carand tranny gear lubeis warmed up it could be a clutch problem.

These Audi trannies seem kinda weird at first. The day I test drove my car i fell in love with it...i absolutly had to have it BUT only thing that really worried me was driving in 5th gear, I'm one to always have my hand on my **** - shift **** that is, when i let off the gas it jerks back 1/4 inch. I didn't know what the hell was going on, if the tranny was kaput or wtf was with it. Dealership said its pretty normal and assured me the tranny was fine.

When its really cold out here I have noticed it too going into 2nd from first, a couple times I didn't put the clutch in far enough and was in gear 1 1/2 haha, needless to say grinded a tad and never went anywhere. Long as you shift at low rpms it should be fine, seems like just normal wear & tear if you ask me.

I have a problem with second gear mostly, doing a tranny change to AMSOIL in a week or two. I hope that helps. I have read great things about Penzoil's Synchromesh, if the AMSOIL doesn't make it better I might add 1 quart of that into the next change.

I have similar problems with my 99 1.8t. Shifts are really hard when it's cold outside; mostly 1st to 2nd gear, you really have to pull the shifter back. I also hear the clunk usually from 1st to 2nd almost every time I shiftand my shifter is very sloppy in all gears. The clunk only happens during acceleration and upshifting, never noticed it while downshifing.

I'm getting this too. What are we to do? Sometimes 2nd is fairly tricky to get into. New tranny oil or what? Can some pros shine some light on this one? [8D]
