they have the right diagnostic equipment, so its a case of working something out

Are you saying that your engine starts right up and then dies? Do you know what an immoblizer light is? There might be a yellow car flashing in your instrument cluster which means the key your using isn't recognized by the vehicles electronics. If you have a spare key see if that one works.
Other than that, take it to the dealer or get the VAG COM software.

yeah thats exatly what happens. I dont have a spare key, the previouse owner never handed in the spares when she traded it in. I do know a place to get a new key made. I will check with the garage tomorrow to see if this is a possibility

You have to get a key with an immobilizer chip in it, then have the dealer program it to the car.
NOTE you have to have ALL your keys when they program them.
