my old 2.8 a6 used to make that same exact sound...my friends would get in the car and think I had it supercharged...I wouldn't be too concerned, as this has been an issue with my old a6 for well over 10k miles. still runs like a charm, cept she need new cats to pass inspection.

HAHAHHA, so does anyone know what this is??? Cuz I was in my car tonight and when I heard it I just started cracking up cuz I was thinking of how many 2.8 owners hear this noise. Its actually a cool noise, lol

Because of this common fact Its a 99 2.8l with about 130000 miles on it. He got it used too...does he have the record on the TB being done?? Nope becuase that would have been the 1st thing out of his month...yes I had that changed. But it sound to me that your ten or waterpump is going on you. But hey I haven't been working on these cars for years and have done everything you can think of to it. So good luck to you.
There is no way you can diagnose this as the problem without more information. Thats just absurd to say he needs a whole TB kit, based on what he described. I'm not saying its not a possibility, but whose gonna spend 1000 on a guess????
Office04, if you really wanta better idea, get in the enigine bay,and find out exactly where the noise is coming from. Also have the codes read just in case, and report any other problems.
And please, let us know what year, and mileage your 2.8 is.

No way..its the ten in the waterpump. They always go bad and in 2002 to 2003 the borke around 40,000 miles. Might as well get the TB done and all the gaskets too (oil smell will go). But you will not have to do it for another 80,000 miles

I finaly got a chance to take a closer look at where the sound might be coming from so I jacked the car up stuck my head under it and listened as close as I could. What I came up with is still not for sure but I think the sound might be either the AC pump or the clutch pulley on it. And if thats not it then its really close to it. The thing is that my AC works as good as it always has and comes on and turns off like normal? So my question before I rip the whole front of the car off again is what other pulley/s are onthe lower drivers side? Thnks again for the help and if I find the problemill let you know.
