could be just about anything. what kind of voltage are you getting from the battery? How much does it drop when the engine is trying to turn over? Could be something as simple as a corroded battery terminal, or it could be as complicated as everything else. start with the simple and work to the more complicated.

good luck

pull a wire and crank to check for spark - if you got a spark then move onto the fuel system and also check fuses.

Do you have Vag Com to check for any faults? Something like a bad Engine Speed Sensor usually will store a fault.

It is not too hard to remove the rear seat bench and the access panels to check the fuel pump. You should be able to hear the fuel pump run when your turn the key on. If not check for voltage at the fuel pump connector.

Hopefully its nothing too serious!

crank it again. pull a spark plug out and see if it is wet.
check to make sure you have fuel in the tank
I would start with checking the fuel pump
you should hook a vag-com to it and pull the codes
the only way to check the spark is with "noids" look them up.

If i was to guess (and I am) I would start with the fuel pump as my first suspect.
you can test the fuel pressure at the fuel rail.
you can get a manual at bentleypublishers.com

Could be Coolant Temp Sensor? Has it only happened this once or does it sometimes crank longer during the cold?

I've got 20 on the fuel pump.

when they are going out.
they work when they are cold and then seize when they get hot.
very rare they just quit on you.
