A6 2.8 Quattro (1998) Gearbox ECU
Hi.
I have a 1998 A6 2.8 Quattro
Some bugger threw a rock in the road and i hit it, damaging the gearbox sump and gearbox itself. Casing was cracked etc.
Gearbox went in for recon, R40 000 (ZAR) later when it came out the trip tronic wasn't working.
Electronics guy blame the gearbox specialist, gearbox guy says its not his problem its electronic.
The Gears shift very smooth, but when your in 5th and accelerate, the down-gearing to 4th is hard and shifts with a knock. Gearing up to 5th is smooth though.
Took it to an auto electrician that have Audi diagnostic machines - R 1000 later he told me that the ECU has "no data feedback", so the ECU is "wiped clean" and must be re-programmed, but it does not need to be replaced - just a matter of software.
This didn't sound right, so I took it to Audi for a second opinion, they told me that the ECU is communicating with all the components - so its OK !!
Audi said the triptronic switch and circuit board needs replacement, so we did it.
R5100 bucks later - same problem, no change.
Now Audi says the ECU must be replaced??? = another R 23 000
I don't understand - the ECU communicates (apparently) with everything, but needs replacement???
I am also told that the gearbox will not even shift gears if the ECU is so buggerred that it needs replacement.
SOOOOOOOOOO -- the ECU is OK enough to govern the gearbox, but must be replaced??
The one guy says it must be re-programmed, Audi says buy a new one??
Anyone out there have any ideas or advice -- i am sick and tired of conflicting messages and spending more and more to "fix the problem" and then there is a new "problem", but the money is spent and parts are replaced.
