help.... my friend has an 96 a6 that suddenly won't drive at all. car starts and runs fine. trans gear selector works. can be put in r or d ect. but car just won't move. dove it to the store and when she came out this happened. at first she thought it was a transmission failure but is skeptical as the trans functioned fine before this. never slipping, shuttering ect. just happened in the 5 min. she shut off and then came out. any suggestions?

Are the tirestouching the ground? One of my favorite pranks is jacking up a buddies car and slipping some blocks under his rear axle.

dodgey gear linkage?

probably some silly bit of plactic has worn/cracked like their ignition switches do

 

Its either the transmission range switch (TR) which would have a fault codes stored in the transmission electronics. Or you blew one of your axles. You lose one axle, the others won't work.

 

Now that would be funny, as long as he didn't see the car up off the ground a tiny bit when walking up.
