Default ABS module help...need to reset?

I recently replaced an ABS module because i was getting the "ABS" light/constantly flashing "brake" light/ and 2 beeps at startup on my 2000 A6 avant.

With the replaced unit the startup beeps don't happen and "brake" light no longer flash on the dash but the ABS light is still there.

Do i have to reset this somehow? When i try to look for codes with my cheapo reader is says communication error....Does the car need to be off/on/or engine running while you check ABS codes?

Thanks
