Default aud c4 a6 knocking noise

Hello all..well i got another problem with my lovely 1994 a6 audi.
just a few momemnts ago i came of the highway..and just before i stoped at the lights i heard a knocking noise, i figured it was a blown tire so no worries.
so i went to stop on the nearst suitable place and everyting was fine. then when i drove of, the knocking noise got worse! it seemd to get louder everytime i swithed up or down a gear..it sounds like metal to metal knocking.
i jacked up the car did a quick inspection of everythin and nothing is loose or damaged. anyone got any ideas? any and all help will be appriciated.

audi a6, 1994, 2.8 quattro

cheers, zw

You haven't said where you think knocking is coming from, it needs to be put on a rack if it's a chassis noise and gone thru...might just be a lose exhaust issue but could be many things under there..if your not running forged OEM wheels you could have a broken wheel etc etc Don't drive it until you know whats going on. Keep us posted.

Well i jacked up the car, its not the exhaust or the wheels..theres nothing loose there, no damage whatsoever...
the noise is only present when im in gear (manual transmission). i thnik it could be the diff or the driveshaft..its definitly coming from the back of the car. and im sure its not the transmission..im stumped

sCould you feel unusual movement on the driveshaft couplings? IMO,it really needs to be up on a rack and checked to pin down the exact location of the noise., it has to be driveshaft or rearend if it's coming from the rear you'd think..could it be a wheel bearing but then it would always make noise regardless of in-gear or out.

You say you have a A6 from 1994? In 1994 there was the Audi 100, instead of the A6.
You may have a bad CV joint or worn suspension. Do you have FWD or Quattro?

Am..there were both 100 and a6, in 1994 they started with the a6 and dropped the 100.
and its quattro yes (read the first post). whats a CV joint? and its not the suspension becouse the knocking is only present when in gear.

hcw meant no harm by his question: the C4 A6s are known as being built between 1995-1997. Even the repair manuals exist accordingly. However, the crossing "manufacturing" lines are a bit "blurry" for 1994...
Anyway, it is good you have a 1994 A6, as it looks much better than a 1994 A100...
If you don't know what a CV joint or axle is or what does, then it is advisable you should take the car to a shop.

Well i didnt mean to "attack" him, sorry if it seemd so, im jsut generaly frustrated by my audi atm..

and i probably know what a cv thingie is, just not in your language/sleng.
i did work on a number of audi c4's in general, audi 100, audi s4/s6, etc.

i narrowed down the problem abit, the sound is coming either from the back diff or from the driveshafts at the back or from the center diff, but since i dnt have a ramp i cant figure it out. im of to the workshop on monday i hope.

One of the driveshaft's sprocket or smt like that, got loose and then broke. now i need a hole new driveshaft (the one from the diff to the wheel).

abit of an expansive job, but i managed to find a used one for abit less money.

tnx ya'll for the help
