Dual rear fog lamps...

Dual rear fog lamps...
So...a few weeks ago i was able to find a 99' a6 in the parts yard. Well among other things i was able to pull the rear fog lamp with a good section of wire off of it. See the pics attached.

Hmm, never ran into that problem...I'll know what went wrong if they stop working I went on to tape and secure the connections.
i'ts a good question why the lens is even there just not drilled out...

I have done this mod. I got the socket from the dealer for about $3. Cheaper than anywhere I could find... even used. It has been 6 years or so but I think the hole is a little over 1 inch -- plus the notches for the ears. I used male and female crimp on connectors to tap the wires at the original light. Completely reversible -- other than the hole drilled for the bulb.
I think the logic of having only one bright fog light on the rear has something to do with avoiding confusion with brake lights and depth perception.

I'm torn about having 2 rear fog lights. I have seen a few A6's around with both functional and although I sort of like it because it is symmetrical. When I see a car with dual rear fog lights coming into view, I just think Olds Aurora. And I hate the look of Aurora's, especially since every Aurora driver has their dual rear fog lights on all the time.
I used to hate that there was only one, but I have grown to like euro look, not the dual American look.

I never run my rear fog because it looks like one is burnt out. And most people in north america have no clue that there is only supposed to be one... If they wanted only one, they should have only made space for one...looks like **** IMO. I give this mod 3 thumbs up.

haha...i agree that the single rear fog is good looking BUT, why the F did they put two lenses AND reflectors on the car? Makes it seem like an afterthought or an "oops!" in the design (if you don't just think its burnt out like i did at first till I dug down to discover that, well not supposed to be one) So yeah would have preferred one but...

Most manufacturers try to make their product to fit as many markets as possible... with as few modifications as possible. With this part, the only difference between left hand drive markets and right hand drive markets is where they drilled the hole.

You guys just gave me with this thread an idea how to "fix" my back-up non-functioning lights!
The rear fog light and back-up light sockets are the same (well, differently colored). I may just lengthen the wires from the fog light to reach a little higher to the back-up light socket holes, and tap into them for a splice.
I guess I could live with two drawbacks: I will need to have the drive lights on when turning the switch on, and no more use of the rear fog light (although I haven't used it so far). However, it will save me purchasing the outrageous $ 400 Neutral Safety Switch.
