Need advice on a high mileage 2006 A6 4.2 Quattro
I found an 06 a6 that I'm absolutely in love with, but I'm wary of the high mileage. It is a vehicle that just came off lease from a doctor who apparently had to drive quite a bit, as he put on 108,000 miles already. Car history checks out, no accidents or anything, seems to be well maintained. Car is listed at 16k, which is well priced compared to similar cars, but the others are in the 80-90k range instead of almost 110k.
So, great knowledgeable community, what's the opinion on higher mileage 2006 A6's? Will I be sunk in $10 grand worth of repairs over the next two years because I'm an idiot?

Let me guess: car is listed out of MN, right? I'm glad to see the dealer came down on it. When I called him he would not come off of $17,900 - which I told him was out of touch. In comparision, I just purchased my 2006 A6 4.2 Midnight Blue w/ Ameretto for $16,900. Has 85K miles on it. Pretty much the same car, except I had to settle for 17" wheels.
For $16K, I think that you should take a real hard look at it. 2006 gets you one year off of the 'new car test phase' and a few nice changes, like the cluster info panel being in color. I'm thinking that if you are looking at any higher milage Audis your doing what I am: getting a good foundation to put on significant milage. I intend to run mine well over 200K.
The 4.2 is outstanding, and is really overbuilt for regualar driving in the USA. Cruising down the highway will not put any strain on that engine and for the miles to be that high they must be mostly highway. Pics look really clean. The guy that owned mine took great care of it and even at 83K miles in feels new inside.
If carfax is good, mechanically checks out, feels right, and price is right - I would not be scared off by the milage. I am so, so glad I did not settle for the 3.2 V6. I'll be back in MN after the holidays if you want to check mine out as a comparison.

The good news is that that model has a timing chain, not a timing belt, so there is one major headache you will be avoiding!
The bad news is it might be time for brakes, control arms, a variety of seals and a larger variety of electrical items. These are all part of Audi ownership so you should prepare yourself mentally to replace them. Make sure you get the car inspected by an Audi mechanic who knows what goes wrong with these cars.
Good luck,
Bob

I got pretty lucky on mine. Brakes are recent (front and back), control arms look good, and so far no issues with seals. Electrical does worry me with the MMI, but what can you do?
The trunk catch had to be replaced right away which seems to be a common issue.

Here's a 2000 with the CEL on - only 2 owners and checks pretty good. You may get it for much less than when was listed. Is worth a shot, even if is 6 years older than what you're looking at right now.
