Default New Audi Owner/Bad Steering Rack

Hey guys my name is Carlos and I just bought an 01 a6 2.7t 120,000quattro with a bad steering rack for $1700. I got the alldata manual online and according to the manual I have to lower the subframe and remove the downpipe. It's really not that big of a deal, but if it can be avoided I would like to know how. I know I have the servotronic assist rack, because I have the 605 relay under the dash, but the non-servotronic rack seems cheaper, so can I get that one instead? I'm also thinking the steering pump might be bad, because the pulley does have a little bit of play. Lastly, I found a diy for the rack for the a8/a4 but non for the a6, I know it's pretty much the same, but if someone know's of one please let me know.
