Unhappy Outer Axel Boots

So took the A6 in to get inspected today. It's an 04 2.7T S-Line with 44k. I'm told I need new front brakes and rotors. Not too shocked over that but they're charging $497 for that. Additionally, I'm told that both my front outer axel boots are torn and they should be replaced at a tune of $551. My first question is do these estimates seem high and secondly do the outer axel boots typically fail on A6's with fairly low mileage? Just want to make sure I'm not getting screwed.

It's a 5 year old vehicle -almost 6 - so the boot failure dosen't suprise me.

Needing front brakes/rotors at 44K does.

I suspect the pads are hung up or your hard on a vehicle - rotors are around $50 apiece, pads $75 a set - labor for an hour $100 $500 is a bit high.

as for the boots - do a search in the forum - there are numerous discussion about what to do

Yes, the estimates seem high. These sound like dealer prices... You will probably save a couple hundred if you find a decent independent mechanic, even more if you give the repair a try yourself. You can buy some time if you machine the rotors and put some new pads on, and the CV joint boot will not cause an immediate failure as the CV joints are pretty tough. There are a ton of posts regarding the CV joint on this forum.

The CV boot, clamps and grease is $23.00 aftermarket per side, 1-1/2 hours remove regrease and reinstall (that's generous). and with the brake job going on they will have the area opened up already anyhow. or when they put the brakes and rotors back on that should be parts only since they would have to put the old parts back on anyway. Get another estimate from an outside shop. 1000.00 for 200.00parts and 4 hours labor??? must be the dealer.

It sounds a little high to me as well. My car is in the same boat as well and I went with EBC slotted and dimpled rotors as well as EBC ceramic yellow stuff pads. I did all four wheels with arguably top of the line performance parts for not a whole lot more than you are being quoted for crappy OEM pads and rotors on just the fronts. Most brake shops will put on your pads and rotors for peanuts if you bring them the parts which you can buy cheap online. check out my pads and rotors pictures in my gallery. they are sweet and way better than stock. If you want to get stock, you coud save a bundle buying the parts online and then paying a good independant brake shop to put them on for you. As to your CV boots, I would recommend you try to find an independant Audi/VW guy and see what he charges or do it yourself with the $20 packet and a few hours labor.

theres a $99 brake place here in jacksonville, fl and they said they would do my audi.. and pads are only 15buck for front and 20bucks for the back, give or take a few dollars, but those chain break shops can do them for cheap

I'd bet the front ones don't have the sensors in them and they will last about 10K miles.

I never said I wanted cheap. My car came with those. I have brake dust all over my driveway POS cheapo brakes and they are noisey, not squeeling just clamping noise. BTW it is cheaper to buy the best pads and put them on yourself only takes an hour or two to do the whole car and have a few beers.
