Default Researching a used A6 to buy

I am looking to buy a used A6, probably 2.7T, but I am not against a 3.0 or 4.2. What should I be looking for on some of these used cars. After looking at used prices I will probably be able to afford an A6 with at least 50-60K on it. Is it too risky to get one over 100K? There seem to be alot of these cars for sale compared to some others, so this makes it tougher to assess the best deal. Any help would be appreciated. I currently have an 04 Subaru WRX wagon and love it and will keep it forever, but I am looking to get an A6 because it has more room and I like it.

Thanks,

Ernest

I would steer clear of 2.7T's over 100k miles unless the owner has all of the service records, so you know what's been changed/serviced. 3.0's and 4.2's are a little more maintenance friendly. Also, if you decide on a 3.0, don't get one with CVT (multitronic tranny that doesn't have gears). I have one and I regret not waiting and finding a 4.2 or 2.7T. CVT is comfy since it doesn't shift and gas mileage is ok, but it's very jerky on take off, it spins the tires without trying (CVT only comes in FWD), there's a power limit of 230HP or else the chains can break, and they tend to have quirky problems like shuddering, which requires replacement, which is upwards of $10,000. Good luck in your search. The best Audi experience would probably be 2.7T with a 6-speed.

i would avoid any car over 100K even a Ferrari or whatever other ultra reliable brand ^_^

I got my 02 A6 3.0 with 59K for less than $16K, and is basically like new, except some minor scratches around the corners, that really need a good eye to be noticed

Consumer Reports reliability reports lists the 2001 2.8 as the most reliable. I bought one two years ago. Since then, I have only had the oil changed, the controls for the windows on the drivers door replaced(PO must have left window down in the rain. Dealer said contacts were coroded.) and I had the upper tie rods replaced on the drivers side. The mechanic showed me the problem before he fixed it so I know it wasn't a scam job. He said that he and a friend both have Audis and it is comon for them to go.

Try to find a CPO Audi...that way you'll have piece of mind that it was looked over/fixed by Audi and it'll have a warranty.
