Some advice on 2005 A6 4.2, please.
If the FOB was dead the stop button with the Advanced Key would not have worked, it needs to pick up the signal from the FOB. My guess with the Advanced Key is that the start button is one of the defective buttons. From what I understand several owners have gone through several buttons before getting one that works long term. Again I have been very lucky with the Advanced Key. You can check the FOB by pressing the buttons and seeing if the redlight on the FOB goes on.
However, based on your comments about the particular 4.2 you are looking at it, it may be better to look for another car.

Kevin, can you take a look at this pic and let me know if you can tell what the heck my version type is? I'm having trouble with my XM stations so I thought this would be a good place to look.
