towing with an A6
Was just wondering what the maximum weight is anyone here towed with their A6 QUATTRO?
I have a 99 2.8 a6 avant quattro automaticand towed a broken ford explorer 2 door up a steep hill to a parking lot. Kept it in first gear and under 2300 RPM. car did just fine. Was towing only for 300 feet or so but i am impressed at the ease at which it towed that explorer.
Plan on puting a hithc for a utility\motorcycle trailer, anyone has experince with that? How does the car handle under load? how much can you actually tow 1800lbs or so?

RE: towing with an A6
Just pulled a 4'x8' Uhaul trailer loaded to the brim with my '95 A6Q, which was also loaded with all my belongings 1/2 way across the country...from NC to Denver.
Nervous the entire drive, but no problems at all. 97.395% on the highway, so no issues for the trannie.
Wouldn't recommend doing anyslalom courses while hauling your junk, otherwise it should handle nice when loaded. 70mph +/- pretty much the whole way, and it felt niiiice.
My bro pulls his dirt bikes on his trailer (w/a 2002 Legacy GT) with no probs, but he said an Al frametrailer is a must for constant use - 300# or so empty.

RE: towing with an A6
The guy I bought my A6 from towed a small trailer frequently to trade shows. I would estimate an enclosed trailer about 8' long. The reason he was selling the car is that he had to start hauling a much larger trailer. The car had 36k miles on it and everything was fine. I did note that he had brakes done around 40k which seems a little early, but I do a lot of highway driving and with a 6-speed, don't use the brakes a lot. I did have to replace the clutch and flywheel at 89k, but I think it was due more to the extra power caused by chipping it 10,000 miles earlier.
I have no idea where he found the hitch, but it is a small one. It looks like it takes a 1" ball assembly rather than the 1.5-2" ones I see on full size SUVs. Obviously I've never used it.

The car is completely capable of towing a motorcycle trailer and gear. I have a trailer set-up with a YZ 125 and a YZ 85R and although I pull it with my truck, the whole things weighs around 1200 lbs. I pull it with a 4 cyl 2 wheel drive. Its not even there. The only thing I would be worried about is an overweight load and the added stress to AWD system on hills/steep grades. Brakes will also wear quicker but if you take it slow and keep it under 1500lbs, you have absolutely nothing to worry about.
