Just purchased an 2001 a6 fwd w/ 115k. Transmission shifts into 2nd gear and runs up to 4000 rpm and then does not want to shift into 3rd. something just doesn't seem right. will shift great in tiptronic mode. My friend is a mechanic and says it might just be the shifter. It doesn't do it all the time either. it's hit and miss.

My 2001 2.8 a6 quattro is doing the same exact thing. So it's an ECM or TCM issue?

 

my tranny didnt want to shift at low RPM going from 3rd-4th and 4th-5th, I also had a bad coolant temp sensor. I guess the sensor was telling the car that it was still cold and that it should shift up at 3k rpm instead of the usual 2k rpm. Replacing the sensor solved my issue. Just wanted to put this out there, maybe you got a bad sensor too?
