'97 A8 Quattro ignition problem
Hi folks,
This morning I went out and started my A8, and managed to turn it off again a few seconds after starting it. Now every time I start the car it immediately turns off again.
If I hold the key forward, not all the way to engage the starter, it will keep running. As soon as I relax the key it shuts off again. I had a few issues getting the key out as well.
I'm guessing it needs a new ignition switch, but I'm not a car mechanic by any means and hence I'm unsure of this diagnosis. I'm not working right now so I'd like to try to fix this on my own (famous last words, I'm sure).
Does my guess sound correct, or should I be looking into something else?

Sounds like the switch - the key isn't maintaining continuity through the contacts unless you hold it rotated slightly. Ignition switches are known fail points in Audis of this vintage so I'd say it's a pretty safe guess.
The worst part of replacing the switch was getting the first two Torx screws to let loose. The plastic panel behind the airbag is a little flimsy as well.
I didn't notice the wheel wasn't back on quite straight until after I was on the road, so I need to go back and fix that. Not a big deal though.
