Audi A8 transmission problems
Are there any additives that are ok to use to stop the leak?
There does seem to be a lot of oil higher up on the head, but it is hard to see because all the piping. I will probably remove the throttle body at some point so i can get a better look. Can the auto trans fluid leak that high up?
The leak isn't fast as i can actually see it dripping out, but if i go for say a 5-10 mile drive, there is oil on the subframe again. It is coming off the undertray and ending up on the n/s cat converter. The converter actually smokes with the amount of oil on it! Is this likely to cook the converter?
Can you tell me what sensors are on the back off the head? i'd still like to check them out.
If the seal had gone on the torque converter, is just a new seal needed or will i need to change the torque converter?

Well i actually think you may have multiple problems here, trans fluid can't get up on the cats, that would be an oil leak from the valve covers. Thats not a very big deal besides smelling burnt oil. Thats common on almost all audi V engines. I would be more worried about the trans like crazyeights said, and have a transmission specialist give it a thorough examination. We can fix the oil leaks later.
Edit: Oh and you're cat conveters aren't in any danger by having oil leaking on them. Just stinks and smokes.
I'm still not convinced the transmission is leaking. The oil leak does look like its coming from higher up, but the valve does look ok. The cam sender on the left hand head (looking from the front of the car) has got a leak, but all the oil is gathering on the other side on the subframe. Using a the inspection mirror, there does seem to be a load of oil on the back of the right hand head, but its still too difficult to get a really good look.

The most common areas the ZF tranny leaks oil from are:
01) Torque converter oil seal (needs tranny pull to fix).
02) Prop shaft output flange seal on rear of tranny (needs prop and output flange removal to fix).
03) Passenger side axle shaft output flange seal (needs axle and output flange removal to fix).
04) Driver's side axle shaft output flange seal (needs axle and output flange removal to fix).

03) Passenger side axle shaft output flange seal (needs axle and output flange removal to fix).

Possibly wrong fluid level, faulty F switch, other internal fault. Best option is to get her VAGCOM'd, that way you'll know what's wrong for sure.

#1 is a trans leak...atf
#'s 2, 3 & 4 are differential leaks...75/90 gear oil...all replaceable with trans installed and nothing whatever to do with any trans problems or symptoms.
...or rain water intrusion (common) or resulting electrical connection corrosion in the electronics box (ECM & TCM in there) in the plenum under the hood.
I'm no auto trans fan, hence my decision to convert my own car to 01E 6-speed manual, before something in the ZF goes bang.
