Default Making the switch from a Mini basic questions

I'm in the process of selling my mini s and aquiring an early model audi tt. I have my eye on a 2003 with approx. 35k miles on it, quattro 225 hp coupe for just the right price, looks in great condition.

What I would like to know is in general, how reliable are these cars? especially higher milage ones because i've seen many with aroudn 70k miles for great prices that are tempting!

What is the main differences between the 225 and 180 hp cars. My brother tuned many a vw 1.8t and it's my understanding these engines already have the k04? are there other upgrades?

what should i know about the car, common problems, etc.

just tell me about your experiences and is this a good ar for someone with somewhat of a limited budget. I can't afford to fix it every time i turn around, i'm in the navy, so it's not driven for about 6 months of the year, not driven hard when it is driven, but i do drive far, sometiems 3k trips tovisit peopel when i'm on leave. . . so i want reliability.

180 - 5sp, 1 exhaust pipe, 1 side mount intercooler and less hp, k03
225 - 6sp, 2 exhaust pipe, 2 side mount interoolers, k04

PLENTY of upgrades out there, enough to keep you busy for a long time

60k miles, timing belt service.

i drove from rochester ny to daytona beach fl and back without a hitch...

you will get little headaches here and there, but they will just be headaches unless the timing belt goes. and be prepared to put in a good penny for maintanence as these should be properly oiled and what not.

ive seen people here with 140k miles on TTs running strong, hope that helps.

Look at the FAQ at the top of the page as well as the "tt buyer guide" on vwvortex for more info.

Good luck!

Welcome to the forum.

225 has K04
180 has k03

It's reliable as any other car if not better
as long as maintenance is taken care of.
