scan codes? huh? -I'm in Hawaii
okay, so the shop is going to charge me 115 bucks to do a diagnosys for the misfires i'm getting. I really don't want to pay that much just to find out what's wrong. I just downed 6k+ just getting the car to a decent running condition. so, here are my questions:
Anyone know where I can get my codes scanned for cheap? Auto store, etc?
BY CHANCE, anyone live in Oahu, Hawaii that has a VAGCOM?
thanks for any help. I gotta stop the money bleed somehow and some time soon...

Three things cause misfires: spark plugs, coilpacks, and coilpack wiring. The 3rd is the least likely and the cost of replacing the first 2 is about the same as the diagnostic. Find a person with a scanner or a autoparts store that will scan you. Also check your gaps on your plugs. Stock should be .032 and chipped .028.

Coil pack is the correct term for what you refer to as the Ignition Coil. They are the four black units on the top of the engine over each of the spark plugs.
