Default A4 B5 1997 transmission problem going uphill

Hello,

the transmission on My 97 A4 becomes really ugly when going uphill the gears seem to be stuck and i need to take the car to arounf 6000rpms for the transmission to shift to the next gear.
This is really making the car undriveable . any hints ?

When you are going uphill there is a larger load on the motor. The transmission will stay in a lower gear in response to that higher load.

So not shifting up is normal. Is the car doing something that makes you suspect something is wrong?

Base Drifter is right, but 6K is a lot of revs. Any chance your fluid is low and the trans pump is starving when the car is at an incline?

actually let me give more details, the car when i first bought it 2 years ago used to have this :

as soon as the car is tilted upwards and im going up a hill the transmission becomessomehow " sports mode", the gears take up to 5000 rpms to shift, and as soon as the road gets flat again the gears start to shift normally again ( 2700 rpm)

now this phenomena is still the same but it became really exagerated , it is taking very high revs to shift, but also when the road becomes flat again it goes back to normal.

And concerning the transmission fluid i had it changed along with the filter last yaer but i will check again to see if it is low.

the way i am guessing is one of two thing :

1- a problem with the transmission itself, maybe it has an inclination detection system and takes the car into some sort of sport mode.

or

2- the engine is not delivering enough torque for some reason to the transmission in order for it to shift normally

PS : i can feel the power not really what it used to be

ok i agree, but it has become exagerated, some time needs more than 6000 rpms to shift . is it a malfunciton in the transmission ?
