Audi won't go into reverse
ahh you are in luck gentleman as i am currently looking into finding the culprit my dads 2001 a4 1.8t automatic is doing the same thing but check this out when the maf sensor is plug in car wont go reverse but when maf is unplug car will reverse fine normal and check engine light is one as well.
We think its a wiring issue or maybe an open or short on a wire, for now we keep the maf unplug to have the reverse work till we find what is the reason behind it we know is not the maf itself but something related to it.
i will make sure to mention the fix if i ever get to the bottom of it.

I'm having this issue where I have reverse for ~2 seconds, then it disengages
but if I go Neutral Reverse again, I get another 2 seconds of reverse.
Only when hot and reverse is fine when MAF is unplugged. MAF voltages
appear fine with +12V,+5V ref, ground and ~1.6V signal at idle.
Have scoured the net and nobody seems to have a solution for this.
Any info would be appreciated, thanks.
Hi,
I have 1997 Audi A4 1.8 automatic my issue is Audi won't move into reverse but will go forward. I can move the automatic shift into forward neutral and reverse but when in reverse it won't move. Check engine light is also on. Never had that happen, I remember driving over quite bit of water the other day. That could be a reason what I'm thinking, and also I can't locate the transmission dip stick anywhere around the engine compartment, where would I find that to check transmission liquid? Any suggestions or insights are appreciate it.
Thank you,

Hi, I realize this is an old thread. Did you ever find a fix to this?

One of 2 things i think.
1, The Transmission control computers got wet & fried itself. Find it & find out.
2, The Multifunction switch on the side of the gearbox has failed.
OBD2 will give you a code. Such as 'implausable signal'.
Im trying to figure this out on several A4 B5's at the moment.
Theres a cheap multifunction switch on ebay etc for less than $50 & original oem for $200 +.
Its a diy job, but needs obd2 to reset it i i thi.
Theres 2 versions of the switch, round & rectangle plug.
0501 209 896 Round plug on my 2.4 V6 its got little microswitches inside it.
Theres 8 wires so i think this corresponds with 8x either 'On' or 'Off' & therefor being a 8 bit info of 1 Byte.
Only 1 switch contact has to go bad to stuff it up.
Since it goes thru reverse more often, this might be why reverse is affected most often.
I do know that some of them have 'wiper switches' inside instead of microswitches.
Also the plastic pegs that hold the microswitches in place could break. Or bad contacts, or gearbox fluid getting into the switch, OR a bad connection at the plug is common.
.I have a parts car 1.8, but i cannot find that switch on the gearbox. Its a standard ADR engine & 8 think that the turbo version has a different gearbox & therefor has this multi function switch, as well as all of the V6 engines.
I suspect that the switches give the same output signals to the wires, so its only the plugs that are different. I did find the output codes per position of the switch.
Its raining here so i can only get under the various cars intermittently.
i have 5 audis might have this problem & would like to get to the bottom of it.
A bad circuit board around the gearlever causes a similar problem but i expect the OBD2 to put out a different code.
1 car has had a wet computer, its a V6 quattro 2.8, but trying to see if its the switch as well, i bought these cars like this too.
8 will update this as i find answers.

0501-317-994 is the number for the rectangle plug version.

Thanks, i got under the 2.8 quattro today & found it. When sitting in the car its on the right hand side of the transmission, under that trans mount. We drive on the left in NZ so the drivers seat is on the right hand side. Im not sure what things they change to do this other than the obvious drivers seat/steering wheel/ brake master cylinder & battery.
Often the little gate for the tiptronic is still on the left side of the gearlever...weird.
The trans is a 5HP-19.
There's only 6 contacts on the switch, so that blows my 'Bit & Byte' theory out.
And yeah, its not that easy to get too.
I did find that my Allroad should have the same switch, i bought the Allroad for US$120 so when i buy one, i have spare parts, its deregerested, no wheels, smashed windscreen & FL corner.
I will check it tomorrow, but will be working on a different car & get back to it in a couple of days if the weathers fine.
Aliexpress has the switches for NZ$50. I dunno if Coronavirus will affect my buying one, though i asked a Kiwí on Trademe if they can get one for me ( its better buying from a local seller )

On my 2.4 litre 1998 wagon, it's on the left hand side, seen when sitting in the car. It's also the round plug.
transmission AG5 01V TCM# 8D0927156R i got the switch & replaced it ( under that mount ) it is a bit of work, but do it methodicaly & you will get there.
It did fix it, and not. I'm sure it's actually fixed the problem, but it's still not right.
it will move forwards, once it hits 3500rpm.. it brings the gear readout into a different colour ( can't remember what now ) that can be cleared by OBDi.
I tested it with a cheap KKL reader, Rosstec lite version, and it's come up with no voltage on several transmission solenoids, so I'm quite sure that there's a bad connection at the plug & they are not getting power.
Solenoids 4,5,6,7 all are 0.747a. but my notes are messy & confusing.
Since somewhere else I have 1 = 1, 2=1, 3=0, 4=0.615a, 5=0.150a, 6=0.747a, 7=0.150a
Solienoid #1 = N,88, 2=N89, 3=N90
It turns out the A4B5 1.8, non turbo, has the transmission control switch on the rear of the transmission & it seems to be a variable resistor. I cleaned it up & swapped it over & it made no difference. One of the 2 identical versions of this that I have, has no reverse gear, the others wheels are locked up. ( I think this is caused by a pin sliding out of the diff & catching inside, this feels plausible as when I turn the front wheel on one side, it moves a bit & suddenly stops, wiggling it changes the movement distance somewhat. But won't free it up.
i think I might scrap that car, it's still got rego plates, but I need a engine for another car. Sadly.
