Default To buy or not to buy? 1997 A4 2.8 Quattro

I'm not sure what the mileage is quite yet, but can someone please help me decide on buying this ride or no? I'm pretty mechanically inclined, and have tons of tools, and the problems with the car are as follows. EGR valve, EGR solenoid, rack and pinion assembly, tie rods, and the power steering pump all need replaced or rebuilt. He's asking $1800, but says he has an offer of $1250 from someone else he's considering. He's sent me 3 pictures and I'm driving 60 miles to go see it tomorrow. I'm thinking about buying it, but was curious if anyone else would be willing to take this plunge? Please advise and thanks a million in advance. O yeah, and he said he took it to 2 different mechanics to have it checked out and this is their "list" of problems with the car. $3400 in repairs.

If it's not been taken care of (which it doesn't sound like it has with all that wrong) I wouldn't waste the gas to go look at it. For what you will have in parts & labor by the time you get done, you could buy yourself a nice car in the first place.

Just my .o2

yea i think i'd prefer the 1.8t anyhow. want the turbo 4 banger...whats a respectable price for a b5 1.8? i'd almost prefer one that the timing belt broke on and could get it for cheaper because i love projects and a top end rebuild can't be that bad...i really enjoy that kinda stuff.

I'm more for the 1.8t also. Has he done anything to keep the car in good condition?

I paid 4800 for my 01 a couple months back, and I think that was a little on the high side. You could probably do better, although I get the impression that those cars aren't so common out west, so you might have to search a bit.

Like these other guys have said a 1.8t is going to be better for mods, but if you want a 2.8 V6 or don't care one way or the other... get a 98 or newer. 1997 had the carry over last gen V6, makes less power.

If it's NOT been taken care of, don't get it (AND it obviously hasn't-or if you want a project car, and I MEAN project car, give him $200-$500 and that's IT!!!

I have 2 2.8s and I love them. One is a 1997, bought it with ALL service records from DAY ONE...and I have had NOT one ISSUE...ALSO, I have a 1998 with over 274000 miles on original motor now....synthetic oil, I took VERY good care of it.

Also, on the 1.8s, it seems Audi has been paying to replace engines in B5s, because if synthetic oil was NOT used, seizes engine due to sludge...my buddy just got a notice FROM Audi for his 1998 1.8, that THEY (Audi) are paying to replace his engine...their fault....
