I do this all the time too, especially at long lights. Better for the car and for your leg than holding the clutch in for 3-4 minutes straight waiting for a light to change.

neutral with foot on brake. some people say its best to hold the clutch in with the car in first so if you end up getting rear ended your car stalls vs rolling

I have a question as this is my first manual car I've had it awhile though.

I sometimes do that rocking motion you were talking about on a hill, you know give it a little gas and slightly let off the clutch to move up and down.. its fun but is this bad? I've never had my clutch smell from doing this.
I only recently started downshifting at some stop signs and lights I know are coming up and I usually don't go from 5/4 all the way to first, typically if im in 4th ill drop it to 3rd and second and then just brake it with the foot all the way in, if I don't feel any jerking motion this is perfectly fine on my tranny/clutch right? Like usually I do it good enough that i can't tell anything happened aside from watching the speed decrease.

the hill thing is bad because its un necessary clutch use and will wear it quicker. I downshift coming to lights and stops also, but only because my brakes don't work at all.

lol that's prolly not good. I downshift quite often, but rev match whenever possible to minimize clutch wear. The only time I don't is if it's a panic stop and then I just dump the clutch to slow down as fast as possible.

haha no i rev match also CC. i have brakes just would rather not use them 60-0 out of trust haha. Dumping the clutch and having the enhole drivetrain shift violently is never a good idea. Hopefully this brake issue is settled soon.....

holy crap how old is everyone here?

seriously that much trouble driving a manual that we have to use the ebrake and or "balance" while on a hill?

is it girly legs or being unskilled?

i use the ebrake on a hill just so i dont have to hold the brake pedal to stay still. call me lazy, i know. but i certainly dont need it to get the vehilce moving without rolling backwards.
