Default Fuel gauge issue, what now?

My fuel gauge has been acting up (when i fill up on half a tank it shows i have 3/4's of a tank, when i fill up on 20$ it says i have half a tank, and when i fill up on a full tank it says i have less than half a tank), i took out my fuel sending unit and i replaced the wire that usually goes bad (it was pretty corded), and i cleaned the sensor. But i still have the same issue, it didnt change anything. So is the whole fuel sending unit bad and i need to replace the entire thing or could it be something else? The sending unit looked pretty bad honestly, looked like it was burned out, but we tested it and it gave normal readings.

sounds like you might have a short elsewhere. if you did replaced the level sending wire and the connection is good it should be good to go.

You could test the sender by removing it from the tank. Connect an analog Ohm meter across the leads going to the fuel gauge. Move the float through its range while observing the meter. The Ohm meter indicator should sweep across the dial folowing the movement of the float, there should not be any flat spots or sudden drop outs to infinity or to zero.

I did that, the ohm moved when I movoed the sender.but the voltage would sometimes drop when moving up.

Then either the resistive element is dirty, warped, or damaged, or the wiper is losing contact during the sweep.
