Default headlight problem...some advice please

the other day my "headlight out" signal came up on the display. one headlight was out. i turned the headlght switch off and on a few times and then both headlights came back on and worked fine. well yesterday the same thing happened...one headlight. i played with the swith a few times and then they both went out. now both headlights won't come on at all. i noticed a few people had similar problems with both headlights but wasn't sure if they were also getting the "headlight out" signal or the case where at first it was just one headlight. i saw the diy of sanding down the contact inside the headlgiht switch. do you guys think i have the same issue? i would appreciate any advice before i decide to tear apart the steering wheel.

Do you have aftermarket HID's?

And did you check all the connections and made sure they aren't lose?

Then your switch may be going out. It's common on our cars. Can you go to your profile page and add year/model/engine/drivetrain to your signature? It'll help us out in future diagnoses. Something like in my sig, or "98 1.8tq-tip" and it'll help out.

If it is your switch, and you can't get a new one right away, send me a PM and I'll give you instructions on how you can get around the problem by adding a jumper wire to the headlight wiring so that the parking light position on the switch triggers the headlights to work.
