I just had a quick question. I drove home from VT yesterday, to NJ and a humming noise started on the way home comming from the rear. It goes away when i take a left hand turn, and i havnt looked at it yet... that comes tomorrow. Just seeing if anyone had any imput on what it might be. The first thing that comes to mind is a bering so if you have any thoughts let me know thanks in advance

 

Wheel bearing. 100% positive. I had the same thing going on a few months ago. It's your passenger side rear wheel, when you steer to the left, it shifts the car's weight to the driver's side, putting less pressure on the passenger's side wheels, so they quiet down for a bit until the weight is distributed evenly again.

 

yea probably a wheel bearing, they tend to hum or growl when they are going.

You should be fine to run with a bad bearing for a little while if you don't want to or cant deal with it right now. I drove for about 3 months with mine before finally giving in and having it done cuz I couldn't stand the drone anymore and havent had any negative repercussions by waiting so long. I know if you let it go for way too long it'll start damaging the abs sensor, but as it is, my abs still is working just fine.

 

driver's rear wheel bearing for sure. have fun with it. you can still drive on it for a while so don't worry too much

 

Wait, driver's rear? Did I have my logic backwards? I thought quiet while steering to the left meant the problem was on the right...

 

Nope - when you turn left the weight of the car transfers to the right. If the noise is then gone, the problem is on the left side as that side is now unloaded. Turning right would load the left side and his car likely gets louder at that point, which is the confirmation of the bad left bearing.

 

I see. So I did totally have my logic backwards, awesome. Haha fail.
