I went to my mechanic today to get my exhaust looked at cause it was making weird noises. Sure enough, he showed me and both my cats are starting to go. That might explain why my gas mileage sucks! apparently they are all blocked up.

So, after an hour of searching online for cats I figured i'd come here to see if anyone had at reccommendations for me so I don't have to sell my left kidney to buy one! and I need two! Looks like the best I can do online is $320 each.

i knowa guy who installed 2 mustang v-8 cats on his 98 q and has no problems. they are a hell of alot cheaper than oem. I would look into universal cats.

 

I haven't used them so I don't know for sure but there are universal cats available for like $100 each.

Edit: ecstuning.com has them for 90 each. It might be worth it to save 460 on parts!

 

i also need new CC's and i dont want to throw close to 500 bucks on OEM universal might be in mind or possibly run it straight???

I was looking at the universal "weld in" ones, I called my mechanic and he said I needed the full "bolt on" ones (assembly). Where as the weld in ones just had the cat that's it.

Any ever have any luck with refirb ones? How long do you think my ride will last while I look for these converters?

Call up ecs tuning and speak to the tech dept. Ask them about the universal cats and if there is any problems with them. I don't think they would put them in a specific audi section if they wouldn't work.

 

your mechanic's freaken whack. I chopped the oem flanges off of my old cats and welded the universal ones to the stock flanges. took me maybe an hour...just make sure you line them up before tacking them in place. Do you have a welder?

 

I concur with This one. A Cat converter is a Cat converter, its not like your trying to turn water into wine. If you can find one that fits, they all do the same d*#n thing. Welding it on is somewhat of a permanent suggestion though. Universal is a good way to go, look into HIgh flow Cats too. Those are easy to find in universal. Ultimately its up to you though. It depends on your preference if you dont mind it being welded, its nothing that a cutting tool wont take care of in the end>:

 

just get universal magnaflows off ebay and have tehm welded in. i know a local shop that installed mine for 50, given i engded up buying 2 new flex pipes insce mine were gone i still got away with everything done for about 300.
