um, since he was doing 70mph when the timing belt took a hike, isn't he also looking at bent valves?

Yeah I figured a rebuild of the valvetrain was a given. Need to inspect the pistons too - they can sustain damage from the valves and will have to be dealt with if that happened.

Is it possible that when the engine stopped it did not damage valves or pistons ,or where the audi engineers stupid enough to make the tolerances so tight that a timing belt failure while driving would be catastrofic..... i have never heard of a timing belt falling apart in the driveway while the engine is off

I seriously doubt that there would be no valve/piston damage if the belt snapped at 70mph. If it survived the initial break then trying to restart it with it out of time definitely damaged them. You must be new if you've never heard of this happening before. Its sadly more common than you'd think since so many people defer maintenance until its too late. Also Audi isn't the only company building engines that get fucked up if the timing belt snaps.
